Hindfoot Arthritis

Foot-ankle Service

Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group

Your feet and ankles provide the foundation for movement and are essential for walking, standing, working, exercising, and participating in sports. Injuries and conditions affecting these areas can make even simple daily activities painful or difficult.

CSOG provides specialized care for a broad range of foot and ankle conditions, including fractures, arthritis, tendon and ligament problems, deformities, sports injuries, and other disorders affecting mobility. Our specialists offer both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options based on your individual condition.

Treatment may include physical therapy, activity modification, bracing, injections, minimally invasive procedures, or advanced surgery when appropriate. Our goal is to relieve pain, restore stability and function, and help you get back on your feet and return to the activities you enjoy.

What is Hindfoot Arthritis?

Hindfoot arthritis refers to arthritis that affects the joints and structures in the hindfoot region of the foot. The hindfoot includes the talus bone, calcaneus (heel bone), and the joints connecting them, such as the subtalar joint and the talonavicular joint.

Arthritis is the inflammation of joints as a result of degeneration of the smooth cartilage that lines the ends of bones in a joint. This degeneration of the cartilage leads to painful rubbing of the bones, swelling, and stiffness in the joints, resulting in restricted movements.

Causes of Hindfoot Arthritis

Hindfoot arthritis may result from various factors, such as:

  • Osteoarthritis: This is the most common type of arthritis and occurs due to wear and tear of the joint cartilage over time.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks the joints, leading to inflammation and damage.
  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis: Arthritis that develops after an injury to the foot or ankle, such as a fracture or severe sprain.
  • Inflammatory Arthritis: Other types of arthritis, such as psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, can also affect the hindfoot.

Signs and Symptoms of Hindfoot Arthritis

Common signs and symptoms of hindfoot arthritis include pain in the hindfoot area, especially during weight-bearing activities like walking or standing, stiffness, swelling, limited range of motion in the affected joint, and sometimes deformity of the foot or ankle.

Diagnosis of Hindfoot Arthritis

Diagnosis typically involves a review of your medical history; a physical examination to assess the range of motion, stability, and tenderness of the affected joints; imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI to assess joint damage and any associated deformities; and sometimes blood tests to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout.

Treatment for Hindfoot Arthritis

Treatment for hindfoot arthritis aims to reduce pain, improve function, and slow down joint degeneration. Options may include:

  • Medications: Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and in some cases, disease-modifying medications for inflammatory arthritis.
  • Physical therapy: Exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility of the hindfoot joints.
  • Orthotics: Custom orthotic shoe inserts or braces to provide support, reduce pressure on the affected joint, and improve foot alignment.
  • Steroid injections: Injections of corticosteroids into one or more of the hindfoot joints to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgical options such as arthrodesis (fusion of one or more of the hindfoot joints) or joint replacement may be considered to relieve pain and improve joint function.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, wearing supportive footwear, and avoiding high-impact activities that worsen symptoms can also help manage hindfoot arthritis.
