Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation in Colorado Springs, CO

If chronic neck pain or lower back pain is affecting your daily life, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may provide long-lasting relief without surgery. At Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, our experienced spine specialists offer advanced radiofrequency ablation treatments to help patients throughout Colorado Springs, Monument, Falcon, Fountain, Woodland Park, and surrounding Southern Colorado communities manage chronic spinal pain and improve their quality of life.

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that targets the small nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals from the facet joints of the spine. By using controlled heat generated by radiofrequency energy, these nerves are interrupted, helping reduce pain for months or even longer in many patients. RFA is often recommended for individuals who have experienced temporary relief from diagnostic facet joint injections and are seeking a longer-term solution.

At Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, we utilize advanced fluoroscopic imaging technology and personalized treatment plans to ensure precise, effective care designed to help you return to your daily activities with less pain and greater mobility.

Spinal conditions can affect your neck, back, movement, and overall quality of life. Pain, stiffness, numbness, or weakness can make it difficult to work, exercise, sleep, or perform everyday activities.

CSOG provides comprehensive care for a wide range of conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Our specialists use a conservative-first approach whenever appropriate, with treatment options that may include physical therapy, medications, injections, and other nonsurgical treatments. When surgery is necessary, advanced surgical techniques may provide another option.

Your care begins with a thorough evaluation to understand the source of your symptoms and how they are affecting you. We then develop a treatment plan based on your condition, goals, and individual needs.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also called rhizotomy or neurotomy, is a novel non-surgical technique of treating pain. This technique employs radiofrequency waves to produce heat and the heat produced damages the nerves transmitting pain signals to the brain. This procedure is performed to treat painful facet joints in the spine that usually cause chronic low back pain and neck pain.

What are the indications for radiofrequency ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation treatment is considered only after it is confirmed that the cause of back pain lies in the facet joints and this is confirmed by performing a diagnostic facet joint injection. Facet joint injection relieves pain for a short duration whereas radiofrequency ablation can keep you pain-free for a longer period of time.

How is the procedure performed?

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive technique and therefore administration of general anesthetic is not required. You will be conscious throughout the procedure while lying on your stomach. Only a small area over your back which requires treatment is cleansed and numbed. This procedure is performed under the guidance of fluoroscopy. The fluoroscope is a special kind of X-ray machine that helps doctors to visualize the placement of the needle electrode in invasive procedures.

During the procedure, your doctor will direct a special radiofrequency needle electrode close to the facet joint in such a manner that the needle tip lies almost near to the medial branch nerve. The needle tip is then heated so that the nerve gets cauterized and destroyed thereby reducing the pain. This procedure may last for about an hour or two.
