Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group is redefining bone health with the launch of our enhanced Bone Health Program, now featuring Echolight REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) technology—an advanced, radiation-free solution that uses ultrasound-based signals to assess bone mineral density and fracture risk before problems occur.

With nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over 50 expected to experience an osteoporotic fracture, early detection is critical to preventing life-altering injuries and avoiding missed opportunities for care. A quick, non-invasive REMS scan provides clear, early insight into your bone health—creating a foundation for you and our provider to work together on a personalized plan to optimize bone strength and reduce fracture risk before issues arise.

SERVICES

Through accurate and radiation-free Echolight REMs technology were able to assess bone density and fragility scores in minutes. FDA cleared, Echolight allows us to detect decreases in bone mineral density early and create a plan to mitigate progression.

  1. Schedule Your Scan – all scans are $125 cash pay. Insurance will not be utilized until your follow up appointment.
  2. Prepare for Your Scan – complete all paperwork (will be sent via email once scheduled), complete your Bone Health Questionnaire, and read through the ‘Prepare for Your Scan’ checklist
  3. Please arrive for your scan at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment time
  4. Meet our provider who will conduct your scan
  5. Schedule your follow up appointment where our provider will review your scan results with you and discuss any necessary interventions and build your plan to mitigate further progression of any bone loss.
  6. Schedule future appointments as needed to monitor bone density status and treatment progress.

PATIENT REVIEWS

ECHOLIGHT REMS TECHNOLOGY

  • Radiation Exposure – traditional DXA/DEXA utilizes ionizing radiation
  • Delayed Results – traditional DXA/DEXA requires a radiologist to process the report.
  • Delayed Diagnosis – typically used only after age 65 where hereditary, physiological, and environmental conditions may have taken place and bone loss has already occurred.
  • Radiation-Free – safe for repeated use at any age
  • Reports Bone Mineral Density and T-Scores
  • Accessibility – REMS technology gathers accurate results regardless of arthritis, scoliosis, surgical implants, or similar conditions.
  • Early Detection – available for any age groups to help identify bone loss and fracture risk sooner
  • Cost-efficient – scans are only $125 cash pay and can be repeated as often as needed
  • New Bone Growth Detection as early as 6 months vs 1–2 years with DXA/DEXA
  • A More Complete Picture of Bone Health – Traditional DEXA scans measure bone mineral density (BMD)—which tells us how much bone mass you have. EchoLight goes a step further. Using advanced ultrasound technology, it evaluates both:
    • Bone Density – the quantity of bone
    • Bone Fragility – the quality and strength of the bone structure
  • Why This Matters – Two people can have the same bone density—but very different fracture risk. By assessing both density and fragility in a single scan, EchoLight provides:
    • A more comprehensive understanding of bone health
    • Earlier identification of fracture risk
    • Better-informed decisions around prevention and treatment

IMPORTANCE OF BONE HEALTH

With advanced, radiation-free technology like EchoLight, bone health can be tracked earlier than ever, helping identify changes before they become serious.

Ages 30–40: Establish Your Baseline

Bone density peaks around age 30, and early loss can begin soon after.
EchoLight makes it safe and easy to get a baseline in your late 30s, especially beneficial for those with risk factors such as low body weight, hormonal changes, or high-intensity training without adequate nutrition.

Ages 40–50: Start Proactive Monitoring

Bone loss can accelerate during this stage, particularly for women.
EchoLight allows for early monitoring in your 40s, helping detect subtle changes and take action before significant bone loss occurs.

Ages 50–64: Stay Ahead of Risk

Many individuals in this age range have increasing risk but may not yet qualify for traditional DXA/DEXA scans.
Routine monitoring, at least once per year, with EchoLight helps identify who may need further evaluation or intervention.

65 and Older: Ongoing Monitoring & Support

Bone density screening is recommended starting at age 65.
With EchoLight, patients now have access to a radiation-free approach that not only measures bone density, but also evaluates bone fragility—providing a more complete picture of bone strength in a single assessment.

This allows for:

  • More comprehensive insight into fracture risk, beyond density alone
  • Earlier detection of changes between traditional screening intervals
  • More consistent tracking for those on treatment
  • A convenient, repeatable way to manage long-term bone health

Bone mineral density (BMD) measures how much mineral content is in your bones, essentially, how dense they are. this is one of the stronger indicators of bone strength and overall fracture risk.

Why its important

As bone density decreases, bones become weaker and more susceptible to fractures, even from minor falls or everyday activities. Monitoring bone density helps:

  • Identify early bone loss before symptoms appear
  • Assess fracture risk and overall bone strength
  • Guide prevention strategies such as nutrition, exercise, or supplementation
  • Inform treatment decisions when intervention is needed.

A Fragility Score measure the strength and quality of your bone, not just the density. Fragility in essence reveals how likely your bones are to break with minor falls or daily activities.

Fragility Scores help to identify:

  • True fracture risk
  • Early structural weakness
  • Changes that may not appear on traditional scans

A T-score compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult at peak bone strength providing us with results that we can demonstrate where your bone density lies in comparison to normal, low (osteopenia), and Osteoporosis ranges. The more negative the number, the lower your bone density and the higher your fracture risk.

Some supplements such as calcium, vitamin D and magnesium can support bone health but needs will vary from person to person. Taking the wrong type or inappropriate amount may be ineffective or even harmful, especially if it interferes with other medications.

What to Know About Bone Health Supplementation

The most effective approach is personalized. Understanding your current bone health prior to starting any supplements will help determine if supplements are necessary, and in what amounts. Before starting any supplements, its best to speak with a bone health specialist.
