Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy is a revolutionary treatment used to heal orthopedic injuries and conditions that cause pain. The orthopedic surgeons at Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group are among the first to offer stem cell therapy for patients in the area.
What Is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy is a cutting-edge procedure developed to regenerate new, healthy tissue at the site of an injury or wound. An injection of stem cells provides an immediate boost to the body’s natural healing power, resulting in faster recovery from injuries.
Stem cell therapy is used to treat several conditions including tendon injuries, cartilage injuries, muscle injuries, fascial injuries, and injured nerves. It can also be used to shorten recovery time after surgery.
What to Expect
Getting stem cell therapy is similar to getting a cortisone shot. The injection will be given as close as possible to the source of pain or injury to provide the most effective relief. The injection site will be numbed, making the entire process quick, easy, and practically painless.
Where Do the Tissues Come From?
The stem cells we use at CSOG come from placental tissue. They are harvested from amniotic membrane (AM) and amniotic fluid (AF) following the birth of a child by cesarean section (C-section). The placenta would typically be discarded unless it is being used for stem cell harvesting. Using placental stem cells is a safe, well-developed method used in many areas of medicine.
The AM is the innermost layer of the placenta and does not contain the proteins that cause an adverse immune reaction – preventing your body from rejecting it. The AM is made up of collagen, cell adhesion molecules, and growth factors to help the healing process.
The AF is made up of electrolytes, growth factors, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, enzymes, and hormones that work together at the site of injury so new cells can form, and the injured tissue can be repaired and remodeled back to a healthy state.
We obtain stem cells from a product called PalinGen® Membrane by Amnio Technology, a company that follows strict guidelines to obtain AM and AF. At the time of Caesarian delivery, the baby is delivered healthy and the placenta (which in the past was typically discarded) is collected – with maternal consent – aseptically along with the AF. The donors are between 18 and 35 years old, are healthy, and have no prior use of medication or other chemical substances. Maternal history is analyzed and blood tested. There is no harm done during recovery.
