Dr. Matthews was raised in Dayton, Ohio. He has been practicing in Colorado Springs since 1986 and has been part of the Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group since the group's formation in 1994. He and his wife, Kim, have been married since 1978 and have three children.

Dr. Matthews is a general orthopaedic surgeon who especially enjoys caring for patients with sports injuries and arthritis. He is a member of the Rocky Mountain Trauma Society, The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Western Orthopaedic Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Matthews is currently serving on the Trauma Committee and is Chief of Orthopaedics at Penrose Hospital.  Additionally, Dr. Matthews has been the team physician for Palmer High School since 1988.
