Community Outreach

Patient care comes first at CSOG; however, care doesn't stop at our doors. In fact, we are active in the community and are always looking for new ways to support, strengthen and serve the community and environment in which we live.

Below are a few of our current community outreach endeavors:

Sports Physicals

Sports Physical EventEvery summer in conjunction with Colorado Sports & Spine Centers we sponsor a Sports Physical Event to help student athletes in School Districts 11 & 20 get a physical exam and assessment for the upcoming school year. The medical providers donate their time and the proceeds go to support the local athletic trainers and departments in the respective school districts.

Not only is this a fun event for the students and families, but it’s also a highlight for our staff. On average we perform more than 700 sports physicals at the event and have a great time doing it.

In addition to getting a physical exam, each student athlete gets a sports drink and an ice cream novelty as part of the event. If you or your child attends high school in School Districts 11 & 20 and is interested in registering for the event, please click on the Sports Physical Event icon for more information or call our administration office at 719-572-0679.

Team PhysiciansDennis Phelps, MD, orthopedic surgeion and Air Academy Kadets Team Physician

Our sports medicine experts support our local community athletic programs throughout the school year and donate their time and energy as team physicians. Typical support entails attending and providing medical support at all home football games for their respective school and providing free initial evaluations and X-rays for injured student athletes through our Bumps & Bruises clinic.

CSOG also sponsors ongoing continuing education courses and training for local athletic trainers, athletic directors and coaches. Currently our physicians serve as the team physicians for the Colorado Springs School District #11 and District #20 sports programs. We have also been selected as the team physicians for the Colorado College and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs athletic programs.

Speakers Bureau

Request a CSOG medical professional to come speak to your organization on an orthopaedic issue or topic in a lecture and question-and-answer format. Please contact Kirk Blad, operations manager, at 719-572-0679 if you are interested. Currently, we are participating in the Conversations with Women lecture series sponsored by Penrose-St. Francis Health Services.

Project C.U.R.EProject C.U.R.E.

Project C.U.R.E. is a non-profit, humanitarian relief organization that collects medical supplies and equipment and donates it to developing countries. When CSOG transitioned to digital imaging instead of traditional X-rays in early 2007, we decided to donate our old X-ray processors, developers, and related equipment to Project C.U.R.E. so they could subsequently be distributed to needy medical facilities around the world.

Teens with Promise

Dr. Derek Purcell, orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Richard Stockelman, orthopedic surgeon, & Dr. Dan Henley, family practice, at COP Sports Physical Event November 2007Teens with Promise is a 501(c)3 charitable, nonprofit organization with a mission of developing resiliency among vulnerable teens. Teens with Promise provides high quality, innovative services for disadvantaged and disconnected youth. To fulfill this mission, Teens with Promise recruits local professionals such as physicians, dentists, and optometrists and unites them with youth in need. These professionals donate their time and talents to help teens who otherwise go without proper care.

Through our partnership with Teens with Promise, we perform free sports physicals for disadvantaged student athletes in the Pikes Peak area, participate in sporting equipment donation drives and partner on other worthwhile community events.

If you would like to donate your used sports equipment, please drop it off at any of our offices. If you have additional interest in supporting Teens with Promise, please contact their office at 719-216-6190.

Soup KitchenA few CSOG Soup Kitchen Volunteers

Every few months a group of CSOG employees and their family members volunteer at the Marian House Soup Kitchen located in downtown Colorado Springs. It is always a fun and rewarding experience as we help some of our less fortunate Colorado Springs residents relax and enjoy a nutritious meal.

Around 25 volunteers are needed daily to prepare and serve donated food and perform clean up duties in order to provide nutritious meals to single men and women, families with children, the elderly and a growing number of teens who visit the Marian House.

Jeans Day

If you happen to be in one of our offices on a Friday, you are likely to see several employees in blue jeans. While such a dress code might be discouraged in most business settings, it’s a welcome sight at CSOG. The reason is that every employee wearing jeans has donated five dollars from each of their paychecks towards a local charity in exchange for their right to wear blue jeans on paydays.Jeans Day

The entire process is employee-driven and a simple way for our staff to serve our community. Each month the “Jeans Committee” selects a different charity to support from the myriad of requests from participating CSOG employees and then promotes it throughout our offices newsletters and flyers. At the end of each month, the funds are presented to the designated recipient and then the process starts again. While the funds raised may be modest, their impact is great and helps our employees become more outward-focused and team-oriented.

Examples of charitable causes and organizations supported through Jeans Day include breast cancer awareness, developmental disability awareness, Big Cats of Serenity Springs, Pikes Peak Humane Society, and SET Family Medical Clinics.
